Suchaillou

Shelter
Derrière le Hublot
2024

Suchaillou is a troglodyte shelter in a landscape of rocky outcrops. Inspired by the local geology, this little hollow suspended from the rock seems to have always been there. From the road, it invites you to take a side path to discover the refuge artwork.

Designed for everyone, suitable for passing through or stopping off, for tourism or hiking, the work offers a view of the landscape. Designed in dry stone and phonolite corbelling, it was created thanks to the involvement of a local team bringing together a wide range of players:
craftsmen such as François Januel, carpenter David Michel and the Pertuis quarry for stone-cutting, as well as elected representatives, students from the Yssingeaux agricultural college and local residents who helped to supply the area with stone.

The interior space has been optimised to accommodate two people as comfortably as possible, with two box seats to shelter their bags. At the back, a stone gong lets you experiment with the acoustics of the phonolite corbelling. Above the door, a large oculus made of shot-blasted glass with a gradual transparency lets in the light and the view of the sky. The surrounding area has been designed to take full advantage of the landscape, with benches sprouting from the walls and a fountain created by the artist Lucie Delmas.
A cobbled path draws waves to guide walkers towards an orientation table, so that they can appreciate the view as a whole.

Suchaillou has received support from the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes Region, the Mezenc-Loire-Meygal communauté de communes, the SIVOM du Meygal, and the communes of Queyrières and Saint-Julien-Chapteuil.
